Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should we lodge our Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)?
Your NOIM must be lodged at least one calendar month before the marriage date and no more than 18 months before it.
What documents do we need to provide with our NOIM?
Usually you'll need evidence of date and place of birth, current photo ID, and proof that any previous marriage has ended. If documents are not in English, authorised translations may be required.
Can our NOIM be witnessed remotely?
Yes. Since 12 June 2024, the NOIM can be witnessed remotely by audio-visual link if the legal requirements for the authorised witness are met.
What are your fees?
Our simple legal marriage service starts from $700. Witnesses, official certificates, after-hours timing, and regional travel are priced separately when relevant.
What's the difference between your simple marriage service and a traditional wedding?
A simple marriage service is focused on the legal requirements, the required wording, and the signing. It is much shorter and more minimal than a traditional ceremony.
Do we need to provide witnesses?
Yes. You need two witnesses aged 18 or over. We can help organise witness support when needed.
Can we get married the same day we lodge our NOIM?
No. There is a mandatory one-calendar-month waiting period unless you obtain a shortening of time from a prescribed authority.
Do we both need to sign the NOIM together?
No. You can sign with different witnesses at different times. The notice period begins once the signed NOIM is given to the celebrant.
If I've changed my name, which name should I use on the NOIM?
You must use your current legal name and support it with the right official documentation.
What if my documents are not in English?
Foreign language documents generally need an authorised English translation, and both the original and the translation should be available.
When do we receive our marriage certificate?
You'll receive a ceremonial certificate on the day. The official Queensland marriage certificate must be ordered separately through the Queensland Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Where can we have our simple marriage service?
We can conduct the service in Townsville, on Magnetic Island, at your home, at a private venue, or at another suitable North Queensland location by arrangement.
What if one of us lives overseas?
You can lodge your NOIM from overseas through the authorised overseas witnessing options. The marriage ceremony itself still needs everyone physically present in Australia.
Can the one-month notice period be shortened?
Yes, but only in limited circumstances and only after your NOIM is lodged and a prescribed authority approves the application.
How do I change my name after marriage?
Your official Queensland marriage certificate is the document most organisations will want to see when updating your name after marriage.
How long does it take to receive the official marriage certificate?
In Queensland, celebrants have 14 days to lodge the marriage, the registry says registration can take up to 5 business days, and your official certificate is issued after you apply and pay the fee.
