Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) in Queensland

Learn how the NOIM works, when it must be lodged, who can witness it, and how NOIM Easy can help.

The Notice of Intended Marriage, usually called the NOIM, is the form that starts the legal marriage process.

If you want to marry through us, the normal order is:

  1. book through Get Married
  2. pay the fee
  3. prepare the NOIM
  4. send the paperwork to us

The main timing rule

The NOIM must be received at least one calendar month before the marriage date and no more than 18 months before it.

The easiest way to prepare it

Use NOIM Easy.

It walks you through the form step by step, creates a completed PDF ready to print, and can also email a copy to your celebrant.

Who can witness it

The NOIM must be signed before an authorised witness.

Depending on where you are, that can include people such as:

  • an authorised marriage celebrant
  • a justice of the peace
  • a legal practitioner
  • a medical practitioner
  • a police officer
  • certain Australian diplomatic or consular officers overseas

Can it be witnessed remotely?

Yes. The NOIM can be witnessed by audio-visual link if the legal rules for remote witnessing are met.

What the NOIM does not do

The NOIM does not automatically lock in your date.

With our service, the date, time, and place are confirmed after your paperwork is received and we know our availability.
